Hope for Wisdom
One of my favorite Christmas Carols is the song, “Do You Hear What I Hear.” It was written in 1966 by Noel Regney and Gloria Shayne. The song was a prayer for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis and calling people to put God first again in their lives. The song tells the story of the birth of Christ and the signs that lead up to the world knowing of the great miracle of God’s Love.
This week are theme for Advent is Hope for Wisdom. The bible challenges us to seek Wisdom in our lives. The question is: “How do we find Wisdom”? The song gives us a great example of just how we can gain the “Hope for Wisdom” in our lives.
In the book of James, it says: “if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all “(James 1:5). We need to seek God out. The song starts out with the lyrics, “Do you see what I see.” Wisdom means we need to open our eyes and see how God is at work in our lives. This means we need to become more childlike. Have you ever noticed the wonder and awe children have in seeing the world? I think one of the great gifts we can give ourselves this Advent season is to open our eyes and look for the star that is going to lead us to discover the Lord.
The song goes on with a simple phrase, “Do you hear what I hear.” Do you ever stop to think of all the wisdom that has been shared in our lifetimes?
We have received wisdom from our mothers and fathers that as children we made fun of, but now as adults we share the same advice with our children.
Wisdom also was shared with us from school and the school of hard knocks.
The greatest wisdom we could ever receive comes from the Word of God. Reading the bible and listening to the stories of Jesus and His salvation plan is a song that should always be playing in our hearts.
Now once we have seen and heard, we need to proclaim the good news. St. Francis said we are to proclaim the Gospel always and use words only if necessary. In other words, we are called to live our lives and the wisdom that we are children of God, so that everyone we encounter comes to know the love of God.
We all know the story of our salvation. Sharing the story of his mercy and love with others will bring a peace that is beyond our understanding. We need to help this world full of darkness come to see, hear, and believe in the wisdom and love of God.
My prayer for all of us is that this Advent and Christmas, we will turn back to become childlike and see the wonder and awe of the gift of our faith. The wisdom is simple, this child will bring goodness and light to all.
It is time to walk in his ways of Wisdom!
