Servant Leadership

Servant leadership, as modeled by Jesus, is a powerful approach to leadership that focuses on humility, service, and empowering others.

Jesus taught, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” (Matthew 20:26). In this, Jesus flips the typical model of leadership on its head; true greatness is found not in power but in service. For Christians, this call invites us to lead from a place of humility and love, putting the needs of others before our own ambitions or status.

To live out servant leadership, a Christian can start by prioritizing listening, empathy, and active support. Listening helps build trust and demonstrates a genuine interest in others’ well-being. By truly hearing others, we can understand their needs and offer help where it’s most impactful. Jesus listened to people’s struggles and used his words and actions to meet their needs, and we are called to do the same in our own relationships, whether in the workplace, church, or family.

Another essential aspect of servant leadership is humility. It requires us to value others’ perspectives, recognize our limitations, and give credit to others. In Philippians 2:3-4, Paul writes, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.” As Christian servant leaders, we can adopt this attitude by making choices that prioritize the team or community over personal gain.

Servant leaders also invest in others’ growth and development. When Jesus led, he didn’t just perform miracles and give sermons; he trained and empowered his disciples to carry on his work. We, too, can encourage and develop others, sharing skills, resources, and support so they can flourish.

In the Christian faith, servant leadership is a core principle rooted in the teachings and example of Jesus Christ. Jesus, the ultimate leader, demonstrated servant leadership by washing his disciples’ feet (John 13:1-17). This act of humility and service set the standard for all who aspire to lead with Christ-like character.

Practical Suggestions for Servant Leadership

  1. Put Others First: Prioritize the needs and well-being of those you lead. This involves listening attentively, valuing their contributions, and being willing to sacrifice for their benefit.
  2. Lead with Humility: Embrace a humble attitude, recognizing that true power comes from God and is best exercised through service. Avoid seeking recognition or personal gain.
  3. Empower Others: Invest in the development of your team members by providing opportunities for growth, offering guidance, and encouraging their unique gifts.
  4. Live with Integrity: Be a person of integrity, demonstrating honesty, transparency, and consistency in your words and actions. Your character will inspire trust and respect.
  5. Serve with Compassion: Show genuine care and concern for others, especially those who are struggling or marginalized. Offer support, encouragement, and practical assistance.
  6. Forgive Freely: Practice forgiveness towards others, just as Christ forgives us. Holding grudges or resentment hinders effective leadership.
  7. Seek God’s Wisdom: Regularly seek God’s guidance through prayer, Scripture reading, and reflection. His wisdom will illuminate your path and empower you to lead with discernment.

Living out servant leadership as a Christian means continually asking, How can I serve? instead of What can I gain? It’s a mindset of seeing others as equals and loving them through practical acts of service, kindness, and encouragement. By doing this, we can reflect the heart of Christ and create spaces where people feel valued, supported, and inspired to lead in the same way.  By striving to live out these principles, we can become more effective leaders and make a positive impact on the world around us.
